On Thursday, Oct. 9, Southern Utah University’s Community Engagement Center hosted its weekly Thunderserve activity with the “Flowers for Seniors” event. Students gathered to arrange flower bouquets for senior citizens.
“Thunderserve does something different every week to get students involved,” explained Thunderserve Service Leader Sam Hook. “This week’s idea came from Leah, who works in a care facility. She wanted to do something meaningful for the residents there.”
Attendees built as many bouquets as they wanted using a variety of flowers, ribbons and notecards wishing a “Happy Fall” season. Snacks such as Rice Krispies treats, animal crackers and granola bars were also provided.
Karlie Arnold, a first-year student at SUU, joined the event thanks to a friend.
“It seemed like a fun, cute experience, so I came,” she said. “My favorite part was seeing it all come together. Plus, I’m excited because we get to give someone a happy moment.”
Next Thursday, Oct.16, students will meet at 4 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Living Room before heading over to the “Our House” rest home together. All are invited to participate.
“They’re trying to make a difference in people’s lives,” added Arnold. “It’s a really good volunteer opportunity.”
Part of the Community Engagement Center, Thunderserve is one of many volunteer opportunities offered by the organization. Students can work at the Hope Pantry, Bread and Soup Night, SUU Storytime and more.
“Even when we run out, we can still talk to people and brighten their day,” said Hook.
