Thunder 91 hosts this year’s Battle of the Bands during homecoming week

The 2025 Battle of the Bands, a famous Southern Utah University event, was held on Sept. 24 from 7:30-10 p.m., on the SUU Upper Quad. This year, a St. George, Utah band, Camo, won judges’ choice and a local band, Post Human Democracy, earned the most student votes and won people’s choice.

Thunder 91, SUU’s radio station, has been hosting the Battle of the Bands every October in the America First Event Center. This year, the event was held over homecoming week in a different location. Students came from prior events all over campus to end the night with the musical competition.

The new date and location change caused a significant increase in student attendance, making it one of the best Battle of the Bands yet. SUTV-9 live streamed the event, so even those who could not attend in person were able to enjoy the live music.

2025’s competition featured eight bands from around the area. While a few of them originated in St. George, most of them consisted of local SUU students. These bands had to register and audition prior to the battle for a chance to compete.

The winners took home cash and other prizes donated by local sponsors. The main prize was a PA system donated by Cedar Music Store and the bands also received accessories and gift cards from other businesses including Whittlesticks, Guitar Garage and Plaid Skeleton Studios

“Camo was very appreciative of the PA system. They were grateful for something better to use in their performances and I was glad to donate and support these local musicians,” said owner of Cedar Music Store Derrek Adams.

Besides live, local music, attendees enjoyed sugar cookies, raffles, Dole Whip and prizes. The school even offered the chance to win a $500 scholarship for those who stayed throughout the entire show.

“Amazing event. Very nice and lovely people here too,” said student Cesia Velazquez.

Homecoming week will continue through Sunday, Sept. 28. For more information on the Battle of the Bands, visit Thunder 91.1. The full homecoming week schedule can be found on SUU News.
