Southern Utah University, nicknamed the University of the Parks, features beautiful outdoor landscapes located only a short distance from campus. These include a variety of hikes, trails and nature walks in the southern Utah area.
While Zion and other national parks are within a few hours drive, there are many hikes less than 30 minutes away from Cedar City. September is an ideal time of year to visit some of these natural monuments.
Red Hollow Trailhead
The red hollow trailhead is about a ten minute drive from SUU, and it features a red, rocky trail that is suitable for beginner or intermediate hikers.
“What a neat trail to independently do! My 90 year old granny could do this one,” said Spring DiMartino in a review.
This trail is a part of the Thunderbird Garden trail system, and it is a great first hike for those who want to experience Utah’s red scenery.
Kanarra Falls
If red rocks and desert scenery don’t sound amusing, Kanarra Falls in Kanarraville, Utah contains an entirely different view of southern Utah.
Kanarraville is only 15 minutes away, and is home to some of the most beautiful waterfalls and streams in the area. The Kanarra Falls hike takes about 2-3 hours to complete, but ends with a view like no other. Make sure to bring waterproof shoes and a jacket to withstand the cold water.
Kanarra Falls is mostly flat and a moderately easy hike, but it is not for everyone. Be aware of slippery rocks and moderate climbing as the trail grows closer to the falls.
Alpine Pond Loop
Sometimes, even frequent hikers enjoy a relaxing and easy trail to hike. The Alpine Pond Loop trail is one of the easiest hikes around, but the scenery is still worth the trip.
This trail circles Alpine Pond and only takes about an hour to complete. It is known for its gorgeous and colorful trees during the fall months, and multiple Google reviews highlight its wildflowers and other natural aspects.
“Absolutely beautiful! Some of the most crystal clear water I’ve ever seen,” said an anonymous reviewer. “The trail was pretty easy and there was a lot to see.”
These three hikes are a perfect starting point for those who want to see what southern Utah has to offer. To see more hikes in the area, visit the AllTrails Website.
