Finals are coming up fast for the spring semester. Southern Utah University students will dedicate the week of April 21 — 25 to taking end-of-course exams and completing final assignments for all classes.
Finals week can be a stressful time of the semester for any student, which is why it is important to be prepared to take on exams and projects. While preparation and routines for the week can look different for everyone, there are many strategies that can help SUU students tackle their finals.
SUU Alumni Ashley Peterson experienced multiple finals throughout her college career. She claims that one of the best and most simple things a student can do is “try not to stress out.”
According to the Counseling and Psychological Services at Brigham Young University, stress can work up the mind and result in worsened concentration and memory. Learning to manage and be aware of stress can drastically improve cognitive function.
“Be calm and confident with everything you’ve learned throughout the semester,” Peterson added.
Like with anything else, practice makes perfect when it comes to finals. In this case, the best way to practice is with adequate study time.
“Nothing will work if you don’t make sure to study,” said Eyshia Vanieperen, SUU student. “Be patient and kind to yourself and you got this.”
While every student benefits from different study techniques, and it may take time to discover what works best for them ,Midland University determined that one of the most effective forms of studying happens in group study sessions.. They can reduce stress and promote efficient learning.
Another way to prepare for finals week is planning ahead and having a set routine.
“My plan is to review past assignments and tests,” said student Stryder Wiese. “I’ve always struggled knowing where to start when studying for a big test because there’s so much information to try and cover.”
Whether it be a written study schedule or a session at the tutoring center, there are a variety of tactics and campus resources to help students prepare. .
