Southern Utah struggles in Ford’s return

A late surge was not enough to hold off Abilene Christian University as the Southern Utah University men’s basketball team fell short in a 84-70 loss.

With the loss the Thunderbirds drop to 10-14 on the season and 2-8 in the Western Athletic Conference. ACU, with the win, improves to 11-13 and 3-6 in the WAC.

First half
This game was the return of SUU’s Dominique Ford who saw limited minutes but still made an impact on the offensive side of the ball.

The game started neck and neck with both teams trading baskets but it was ACU who concocted a double-digit lead halfway through the half which grew to as large as 19.

Turnovers have been the biggest issue for the T-Birds this season and the first half was no exception. SUU committed 10 turnovers that led to 16 points for ACU.

ACU’s big men were dominant, scoring 20 more points in the paint than SUU, that paired with the points off turnovers is what gave ACU its commanding lead. ACU ended the half on top 51-32.

Second half
Hot shooting for the Wildcats increased their lead to 20 early. Southern Utah was able to make a late push with some great play from Brock Felder. Felder had six points, 10 rebounds and tied his season-high with five blocks.

Hunter Jack Madden of ACU chaperoned the offense providing 22 points and hitting four of ACU’s five three point shots. ACU also had four players in double digits.

Southern Utah fought hard in the second half but fell to ACU 84-70.

Key statistics
