Uhrich’s 24 points not enough in loss to Wildcats

After being at home for the last three games, the Southern Utah University women’s basketball traveled to Abilene, Texas, to face Abilene Christian University on Saturday, Feb. 8. Southern Utah struggled, falling to the Wildcats 74-52. 

With the loss, Southern Utah falls to 4-19 on the season and 2-8 in the Western Athletic Conference. Abilene Christian improves to 15-9 overall and 4-5 in the WAC. 

First quarter
ACU controlled the first quarter by not letting SUU gain any momentum. ACU held the T-Birds to shoot just 25% from the field and 16.7% from three. 

Breanna Davis led the way for Abilene Christian with four points in the quarter as ACU led 18-9 after one. 

Second quarter
Ava Uhrich scored four points in the quarter’s first three minutes to cut the lead to six. The Wildcats responded with a 17-4 run over the remaining seven minutes to take a 38-19 lead at the half.

Third quarter
Out of the break, Uhrich scored nine of SUU’s first 11 points in the third quarter to cut the lead to 14. ACU’s Bella Earle responded well, scoring 11 third-quarter points and helping give Abilene Christian a 23-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

Fourth quarter
Despite being down big, Southern Utah continued to play hard. SUU had their best offensive quarter in the fourth, going 7/16 from the field and 3/6 from three. 

Uhrich scored eight points in the fourth, but ACU handled SUU at 74-52.

Key statistics
— Uhrich scored a game-high 24 points
— Earle led the Wildcats with 23 points and nine rebounds
— ACU outrebounded SUU 41-28.

What’s next?
Southern Utah will stay on the road when they take on in-state rival Utah Tech University on Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. This game can be streamed on ESPN+.
