To mark the second edition of Giving Thor’s Day on Thursday, Feb. 27, Southern Utah University’s Advancement Office invites anyone interested in earning a scholarship or contributing to the university’s development to participate in Thor’s Thunder Quest.
Running from Monday, Feb. 3 to Thursday, Feb. 27, Thor’s Thunder Quest is a scavenger hunt for both on-campus and online participants.
Throughout the quest, participants will search for clues and complete challenges. Once students solve the clue, they can post proof on social media using the hashtags #ThorsThunderQuest and #GivingThorsDay. Clues will be revealed every Monday and Thursday at noon on the @suutbirds and @suualumni Instagram accounts.
By completing the hunt, students will be entered into a drawing for a $2,500 scholarship.
The first clue for on-campus participants has been revealed: “By the name we proudly display, behind a letter, your challenge will stay.”
The online hunt will begin on Feb. 13. Online students will have the chance to earn a $1,000 scholarship by following a similar process, while Alumni, community members and friends will have the possibility to get this scholarship awarded in their name.
All clues will remain visible on their website after the deadline, allowing everyone a chance to participate in this adventure.
The quest will culminate in a grand finale on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at noon.10 items will be hidden across campus and each student who finds an item will receive a $500 scholarship.
“We wanted to try and get more awareness of (Giving Thor’s Day) and try to do some fun things,” said Annual Giving Manager of SUU Advancement Jaley Cox. “We want to be able to give back to students. So this is a way to be able to do that and give them scholarship money.”
Giving Thor’s Day serves as a general fundraiser supporting scholarships, on-campus programs and other initiatives to ensure T-Birds have the resources they need.

“All of the different initiatives we have for this are directly helping students,” said Cox. “Giving Thor’s Day is to help promote scholarships and donations from anybody who’s willing to give.”
In addition, two additional Giving Thor’s Day events will take place on Feb. 27: The Hammerfest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Sharwan Showdown from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Rotunda of the Sharwan Smith Student Center.
During the Hammerfest students will fill out a scorecard by participating in activities such as taking a picture with the hammer, making a donation and hanging a ribbon for a chance to win one of five $500 scholarships.
“All they have to do is participate in all the different stations or they can come and participate in our Thor’s hammer hold,” said Cox. “(There are) many opportunities for scholarship money with this.”
As the name suggests, the Sharwan Showdown will see students show their strength by lifting Thor’s hammer for as long as possible next to Sharwan Smith’s statue, another opportunity to receive scholarships.
During these events, participants will be able to collect exclusive stickers and swag for joining the quest in the Advancement Office, located in the President’s House.
