The Great Language Department Bake off

SUU Language and Philosophy department

The language department held a bake-off this past Tuesday. Students and faculty competed in a friendly competition to make and eat dishes from around the world. The prize for first place was a coveted French cookbook.

This annual event was originally inspired by the “Great British Bake Off,” and has been a way for students from different language programs to get together and experience different cultures’ cuisine.

Elise McNett and Lily Hood took the cake with their tres leches dessert. The pair was shocked to find out their dish had won first place.

Baked goods from around the world were provided

“We literally made the whipped cream with a frother, but it was fun,” said McNett.

The runner-ups included Mexican quinoa and carlota de limón. The Spanish department filled the podium despite this being their first year of participation.

The coordinators were pleased with the big turnout and the widespread number of dishes brought for all to sample and vote on.

“We want to show our departmental unity and show the students that even in languages where there’s just a few faculty members that we really do work and teach together,” said German professor Corey Twitchell. “We really enjoy seeing our students outside of class and being able to talk to them in the target language or introduce people to other people. We’re all really friendly and we’re happy when anybody comes.”

Twitchell mentioned that events like this help set the scene for a project the heads of the departments are working on to create a new language and translation degree. Though it’s still in the works, the goal is to have a new B.A. for students who want to mix different language studies.

“Everyone there is obviously there for the event so they’re all having so much fun and they’re so welcoming.  We had so much fun,” said participant Lily Hood.

SUU’s many campus organizations are constantly looking for ways to bring students together in fun and creative ways. Check out upcoming events posted around campus and on the event calendar.
