The Southern Utah University men’s basketball team hosted the University of Nebraska at Omaha on Saturday, Nov. 16, in the America First Event Center. SUU came out on top 79-73. With the win, the Thunderbirds improve to 4-0, which is the best start to a season in school history.
First half
The point of focus for SUU was the perimeter shooting of Omaha, which they were able to contain. The game saw good starts for both sides, but it was the Thunderbirds who found a way to pull ahead with a 10-point lead early. SUU punished the Mavericks by cleaning the glass and getting second-chance points. The game was competitive but the first half closed at 41-32 in favor of SUU.
Second half
Despite trailing, the Mavericks found a way to get SUU in foul trouble and went on a 19-5 run at one point, keeping things close. Momentum seemed to be swinging but Jamir Simpson took the game into his own hands and scored 13 straight by himself.
Dominique Ford also started to get hot from all over, ending the game with 22 points and a much-needed block when the game became a three-point difference. The Mavericks outscored SUU in the second, but it wasn’t enough as Southern Utah would win 79-73.
Key statistics
— Simpson led all players with 25 points.
— Lance Waddles led Nebraska Omaha with 20 points.
— SUU shot just 58.3% from the free-throw line.
