The Southern Utah University Football team flew to Georgia to play the University of West Georgia on Saturday, Oct. 26, at 2 p.m. In the first-ever matchup between these two teams, Southern Utah came out on top 28-17.
With the win, Southern Utah improved to 4-4 on the season and 3-1 in the United Athletic Conference. West Georgia fell to 2-6 on the year and 0-6 in conference play.
Game recap
Running Back Targhee Lambson once again led the charge for the SUU running game with 135 yards on 30 carries. Lambson now has 1,233 rushing yards on the year and is No. 2 in the conference.
Quarterback Jackson Berry was impressive under center, going 16/20 for 257 passing yards and two touchdowns. Berry connected to Shane Carr on a 56-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Later in the game, Berry found Chase Merrell for a 12-yard touchdown, their first time connecting on a touchdown this season. Berry’s one interception in the game came in the third quarter when Anthony Rochester picked off his pass.
West Georgia showed signs of promise offensively but struggled to finish out drives. A missed field goal and a fumble in the endzone led to missed points and became the difference in the game.
Quincy Casey started for the Wolves under center and was 15/22 for 139 yards and one touchdown before being replaced by David Wydner late in the third quarter. Both quarterbacks’ favorite targets were Devion Newson and T.J. Lockley.
Newson tallied four receptions for 105 yards, while Locky hauled in six catches for 39 yards and a touchdown.
