The Southern Utah University chapter of the United States Institute for Theatre Techology will be holding their Spook Alley event for the first time since 2022. The event will take place on Oct. 17 from 7 to 11 p.m. and Oct. 18 from 7 to 10:30 p.m. Tickets cost $5. Attendees will be guided from the auditorium lobby through the building and out through the Adams Theater.
“Spook Alley is a tradition that USITT actually used to do a few years ago, and as president, it was my goal to bring it back,” said USITT president Sierra May.
This year’s Spook Alley is titled “Carnival of Shadows,” and will be a spooky circus full of clowns and jump scares. It has been a collaboration between playwrights, designers, directors, actors and technicians.
“We probably have over 40 people working on this production,” said May. “That includes all of the USITT club members, but also a lot of other a lot of people who signed up willingly to work on this, and I was very grateful for that.”
One of the biggest goals of Spook Alley was to have a cohesive script with a full storyline to carry through the haunt.
“That was our biggest goal, and since we were able to accomplish that, it was really beneficial to our designers,” said May, who will be the first to walk through the completed haunt when it opens.
Actors have had multiple rehearsals leading up to load in, and they have been able to have a number of rehearsals in the space to make the experience as good as possible for attendees.
“What’s a better way to spend your Halloween season [than to] go to a haunted house and have some fun? Celebrate these actors that are going to be doing some crazy things,” said May.
