Southern Utah University’s International Office hosted its annual International Food and Festival Fair on Thursday, Oct. 10. Taking place in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Ballroom, students, staff, faculty and alumni had the chance to sample food, drinks and snacks from 16 different countries.
Before the event had started, a line formed clear down the hallway of the Sharwan Smith Student Center down to the student cafeteria. Jaden Taylor, a first-time participant in the event, still enjoyed attending the fair and trying different foods.
“I really liked [the event] and the potatoes from Peru,” said Taylor.

The festival featured plenty of food and drink options from around the globe. Several tables were arranged around the room and each booth showcased the flavors of its respective country; tiramisu from Italy, sangria from Spain, lemonade from Pakistan, poutine from Canada and much more were available to taste.
“I decided to come because I like free food and discovering new things,” said student Ashlyn Krohn.
Besides the food, music from various parts of the world was played, as well as a PowerPoint highlighting the cultural customs, traditions and beliefs of different countries. This created an immersive experience for participants.
“I love the plantain from Ivory Coast and seeing the amount of people here to support our international students,” said Melissa Montiano, international student advisor at SUU. “Just the setup, getting to represent the different countries, to decorate them, put their flags up and learn about their different food was really awesome.”
Because attending an inter-cultural showcase is a tradition at SUU, flower crowns and photos with the Tradition Keeper sign were also offered.
In total, around 500 people came to enjoy the festival and taste the wide range of dishes. More information on homecoming week can be found on the school’s website and other opportunities to engage with the International Office are posted on their Instagram.
