The Southern Utah University women’s soccer team was defeated by California Baptist University on Sept. 28, by a score of 5-1. SUU is now winless in their last six matchups with the Lancers. The Lancers moved to 5-3-2 on the year, while the Thunderbirds fell to 2-6-3.
First half
The Lancers struck first in the 18th minute, as junior Sophia Petrov scored, and was assisted by Taylor Summit and Mia Scranton. The Thunderbirds knotted the game back up in the 31st with a goal from junior Sarah Assumma, assisted by Yui Fujii.
Cal Baptist took the lead for good in the 41st minute, as freshman Nikki Mau tallied her first goal of her career, assisted by Taylor Held and Morgan Witz. The Lancers went into the half leading 2-1.
Second half
The Lancers continued to pour it on, scoring three different goals in the second half. The first came in the 49th minute from senior Lauryn White, assisted by Kaylee Hauck and Scranton.
CBU’s second goal of the period was produced in the 63rd minute and their third was scored in the 89th minute, with freshman Daisy Miller tallying her first career goal. The final goal was assisted by Ava Westlund.
With the three second half goals, Cal Baptist won 5-1 in both schools Western Athletic Conference opener.

— The Thunderbirds have scored one or less goals in eight of their 11 matches, totaling a 0-5-3 record in those games.
— The Lancers had 12 shots on goal to SUU’s six.
— CBU goalkeeper Bella Lister allowed one goal in just over 80 minutes, tallying 5 saves.
What’s next?
SUU’s WAC home-opener will take place on Thursday, Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. as they take on Seattle University. The Redhawks will enter the matchup with a record of 6-2-3, having won their WAC opener against Abilene Christian University on Sept. 28.
