For this week’s Take a Hike Tuesday, the Southern Utah University’s Outdoors club organized a moonlight hike at Red Hollow Trailhead on Sept. 17, from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Groups and conversations formed as the students set off on the trail. After a 30-minute walk with multiple shortcuts, participants arrived at Thor’s throne — a chair made of rocks with Thor’s name carved into it. After a student sat on the chair during the hike, the throne collapsed to the surprise of all participants.
Bry Colbert, a sophomore at SUU, had the opportunity to participate in the activity.
“I think it was awesome to see the different levels of experience and the different age groups here. Personally, I think I’m right in the middle there. I really like hiking but I wouldn’t say I’m really good at it,” said Colbert. “I heard about the hike through a friend, actually.”

Nick Gailey, friend of Bry confessed that she is not a big hiker either, but she learned about the event on KSUU 91.1 and decided to try it out.
Betsy Brown, one of SUU Outdoor Local events, activities and programing leaders, shared why she enjoyed this hike and the purpose of the club.
“I think this is a good hike because it’s super open and you can really see the stars,” said Brown. “I love my experience with SUU outdoors. All our hikes are pretty easy and very beginner’s level, so I think it’s cool that a lot of my coworkers right now are not super experienced hikers, because that’s really the whole point of it. Outdoor is for everybody.”
SUU Outdoors offers a bunch of different activities throughout the week. For more information, students can go to their website and Instagram.
