On Thursday, Sept. 10, 2024 at 6 p.m., the Utah Health Scholars program of Southern Utah University held their opening social in the Hunter Alumni Center. Between pizza, games and prizes, the organization shared its various initiatives and opportunities for students interested in healthcare careers.
During the event, a silent bingo was launched so that everyone could chat with each other over food and drinks. In this environment, students were invited to learn more about the program, its activities and benefits like free practical tests, exclusive seminars, pre-professional cohorts, research possibilities and much more.
Reed Muir, coordinator of UHS at SUU, pointed out that this event was a good way for everyone to meet each other, and understand the importance of being well-inf
ormed.
“As far as why to join the program, it is because we helped people get into graduate schools in the past,” said Muir. “Most of the time there are a lot of requirements many people are unaware of for graduate school, though if they don’t meet them, they can’t apply. This can cause delays or even extra years of preparation and we want them to avoid this.”
The event ended with students taking part in a giant Kahoot quiz, designed to test everyone on medical basics in order to win prizes such as t-shirts, pickleball paddles and a theragun.
Senior in biology at SUU, Eugene Chung had the opportunity to participate in the opening social.
“This event helped me to get the different information for the rest of the semester, but also to know who my pre-med cohort coordinator is, so I can contact him if needed. It was really fun,” said Chung.
UHS members are 10% more likely to be accepted into graduate health professions programs than non-UHS members. Any student interested in healthcare is encouraged to join the program.
The Utah Health Scholars program is located in room 304 of the Science Building. More information can be found on their Instagram and their website.
