BSU honors Black History Month theme with Disco Night

The Black Student Union at Southern Utah University hosted a disco night in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Ballroom from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Feb. 9. Students were invited to join the BSU, along with the Latine Student Alliance and the Pride and Equality Club for a fun night full of food, music, prizes and dancing.

“This [event] was our way to honor the Black History Month,” shared Paige Iverson, BSU’s president. “This year’s theme is African Americans and the Arts, and what’s better than disco?”

The two-hour event provided students with the opportunity to learn dances from the disco era, such as the retro hussle, the bus stop, the double arm swing and others.

“We are trying to reach any and all students, but since it is African Americans and the Arts, we would love to invite our art majors to celebrate with us,” Iverson shared. “A lot of Black culture has created these art forms we have today, so it’s really important that we pay respect to [them].”

If you happened to miss this event, you still have an opportunity to attend others that the BSU has planned throughout the remainder of the month, including the Spoken Word Night coming up on Feb. 15 in collaboration with the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. More information on upcoming Black History Month events can be found on the events calendar.
