Southern Utah University’s Department of History, Sociology, and Anthropology hosted a board game night on Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. Students that attended hung out in the Sharwan Smith Center Starlight Room, ate food and played board games with friends.
“These events are a little more anthropology focused, but we always encourage anybody who is interested to come,” shared Crystal Koenig, an assistant professor of anthropology at SUU. “It’s a way for the department and for the professors and the students to be a little more approachable.”
Koenig and the HSA department wanted to do a specific theme for this event using the games they had.
“We decided to do a national parks theme,” shared Koenig. “It kind of ties into the whole ‘University of the Parks.’”
SUU is known as the ‘University of the Parks’ due to its proximity to recreational activities, landmarks and much more. The university gives students opportunities to explore their natural surroundings, so it made sense as their theme.
The national park-themed board games that were used came from the HSA department’s board game library, which exists to provide students with access to strategy and trivia games.
“We would love more students to use the board game library,” Koenig said. “They can just come to the HSA office in Bristlecone [Hall] and borrow a game with their T-number.”
The HSA department’s office is Room 314. For more information, visit their website.
