Thanksgiving is a time to be grateful for what we have and is traditionally spent sharing a meal with close family and friends.
For Thunderbirds who will be staying on campus at Southern Utah University or in Cedar City away from their homes, here are some ideas to make Thanksgiving at the Nest a memorable one.
Friendsgiving
Friendsgiving is a tradition held by many students who stay on campus. It’s simple: people gather together as friends to make a Thanksgiving meal and celebrate.
Friendsgiving can be as “traditional” or unique as you want it to be. Conner Thornton, a Junior Strategic Communication major, shared his ideas on Friendsgiving.
“When hosting a Friendsgiving, everyone can bring their favorite dish. A creative twist would be to make it a themed dinner, and base it on a country, movie or type of food. I held a Canadian Thanksgiving once with my friends and it turned out to be a great experience!”
In addition to your Friendsgiving, you could host Thanksgiving themed activities. Tiara Wilkin, a Freshman Communication major, shared her sister’s experience hosting a Friendsgiving.
“When my sister had Thanksgiving on campus … they watched all the episodes of ‘New Girl’ that were Thanksgiving themed. They had a great time!”
Fast Food-Giving
Two local restaurants will also be open Thanksgiving day, ready to serve your favorite Thanksgiving foods to you and your friends. While it’s a bit more pricey to go out and eat, you don’t have to argue with your roommate about who has to do the dishes.
1. Denny’s
As always, Denny’s is open 24/7 and will be serving up a Thanksgiving selection to its Cedar City and Thunderbird customers.
Along with their Thanksgiving and holiday menus, your classic American diner favorites will also be available. Denny’s also take reservations, so big groups are welcome!
Check out their menu and holiday specials here. Denny’s is located at 255 N. 1100 W., Cedar City, UT 84720.
2. Golden Corral
Cedar City’s Golden Corral will be offering a holiday themed buffet on Thanksgiving day from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
They will have turkey, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie. But if you’re already eager to get your turkey fix in, you can order your holiday favorites every day after 4 p.m. and Sundays after 11 a.m.
Learn more about their holiday menu here. Golden Corral is located at 1379 S. Main St, Cedar City, UT 84720.
Whether you’ll be far from home or surrounded by friends this Thanksgiving, there’s no wrong way to celebrate what you’re grateful for.
