CEDAR CITY, Utah– The Southern Utah University Softball team lost both games of a double header against the University of Missouri Kansas City on Wednesday afternoon.
Game One
UMKC 9 SUU 6
Winning Pitcher: Mia Hoveland (8-4) Losing Pitcher: Hanna Wynn (2-7) Save: D.J. Cannon (1)
Second baseman Kendall Kapitzke led SUU, going 4-for-4 with a HR and four RBI. T-Bird center fielder Makell Whetten also had a big game, finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs.
The Kangaroos got six hits in the second inning to jump out to an early 5-0 lead. SUU scored in the bottom half of the inning on a solo homer by Kapitzke.
UMKC added onto their lead with a two-run triple off the bat of Maegan Rollow in the top of the third, making the score 7-1. SUU’s Hannah Williams and Kapitzke each got RBI singles in the bottom half of the inning to cut the deficit to 7-3.
SUU would make a late push with one run in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings. However, they would ultimately fall short in the 9-6 loss.
Game Two
UMKC 10 SUU 3
Winning Pitcher: Kailyn Packard (6-4) Losing Pitcher: Hanna Wynn (2-8)
Third baseman Dream Weaver led the Thunderbirds, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and one run.
SUU scored three runs in the bottom of the first to move ahead 3-0 before getting shut out the rest of the way.
Packard pitched a complete game for the Kangaroos, striking out seven batters and allowing three earned runs on eight total hits.
SUU (3-20, 1-2) will host BYU on Tuesday, April 2 at Kathryn Berg Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. and the game will be streamed on Pluto TV Channel 236.
