SUU Sports Weekend Recap 2/7-2/10

Did you miss any of the action from SUU’s busy weekend? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s a recap of everything that happened around SUU athletics this weekend.

SUU Gymnastics Falls to No. 23 Iowa State

The Flippin’ Birds lost 195.375 to 195.25 against the nationally ranked Iowa State Cyclones on Friday night. Karley McClain led SUU with a 38.900 all-around score. McClain earned a 9.725 on vault, 9.600 on beam and 9.850 on floor.

Women’s Basketball Drops Pair of Road Games

Weber State (2/7/19)

The Lady T-Birds dropped a heartbreaker to rival Weber State 67-66 on Thursday afternoon. The Wildcats took the lead with 0.8 seconds to play before Ashley Larsen’s potential game-winning shot from inside the paint was no good.

Four T-Birds scored double-digits in the loss, led by Bre Reid’s 15 points. Rebecca Cardenas scored 12, Harley Hansen netted 11 points and Kiana Thomas ended up with 10.

Idaho State (2/9/19)

SUU fell 80-47 to the Idaho State Bengals on Saturday afternoon. Harley Hansen led the T-Birds with 12 points. Megan Kamps and Jessica Chapman followed with 11 and 10 points respectively.

SUU is now 6-16 overall and 3-10 in the Big Sky. They return to action on Feb. 14 when they host the Sacramento State Hornets at 6:30 p.m. in the America First Event Center.

Track and Field Breaks Records

Angie Nickerson broke her own school record in the 5,000 meter with a time of 16:06.37, finishing in 14th place. Madison Funchey notched a 16:42.59 for the fourth best time in school history.

Frank Harris III set the school record on high jump with a 7’3” to place first in the competition.

Linnea Saltz broke another school record by completing the 600-meter in 1:30.81 to place second in the event.

SUU Softball Wins One of Five Games in Vegas

The SUU softball team opened the UNLV Marucci Desert Classic with a 2-1 loss against Seton Hall on Friday morning. Then they dropped a 10-5 game to No. 25 Long Beach State. Saturday they lost 10-3 to Utah Valley before picking up their first victory of the season, 7-6 over North Dakota, via a walk-off hit-by-pitch.

The T-Birds capped off the weekend with a 11-3 loss to the host UNLV Rebels. Hannah Williams picked up a 3-run homer in her only at-bat this weekend. Emilee Reeder and Kendall Kapitzke each had a solid weekend, knocking in four RBI apiece. SUU (1-4) will travel to San Diego for a three game series versus the Toreros with a double-header on Saturday, Feb. 23 and one game on Feb. 24.

Men’s Tennis Notches a Pair of Weekend Wins

The SUU Men’s tennis team defeated Sonoma State 6-1 on Thursday and Sacramento State 4-3 on Friday to improve to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

Women’s Tennis Defeats Dixie State

The SUU women’s tennis team beat in-state rival Dixie State 6-1 on Saturday. With the victory, the T-Birds improved to 2-4 overall.
