Flippin’ Birds Fall to No. 7 Boise State in Home Meet

CEDAR CITY, Utah– The SUU gymnastics team lost 195.400-194.325 to No. 7 BSU on Friday  in the America First Event Center. The loss drops the Flippin’ Birds to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the Rocky Mountain Gymnastics Conference.

Freshman Karley McClain was the all-around leader for SUU with a total score of 39.125.

“Karley McClain is a stone-cold killer when it comes to competing,” head coach Scott Bauman said. “We knew we could count on her and as the freshmen get this experience they are going to get better and better and better.”

Morgan Alfaro and Stephanie Tervort led SUU on vault in the first rotation with scores of 9.800 apiece. SUU finished with a team vault score of 48.850 while BSU put up a 48.350 over on the bars.

SUU scored 48.925 on the bars in the second rotation as Shylen Murakami led with a 9.875. Over on the vault, BSU scored 48.900.

In the third rotation, Hannah Nipp’s 9.875 led SUU to a 48.925 on beam. BSU ended the rotation with a 48.900 on the floor.

SUU led 146.675-146.150 entering the fourth rotation.

McClain led SUU with 9.850 on floor as the team scored 47.650. Over on the beam, BSU’s Shani Remme got a 9.900 to earn the high score of the meet. SUU ended up having to count a couple falls in the rotation which ended up being the difference in the outcome.

SUU travels to Boise State on Jan. 25 to rematch the Broncos before returning home to face Utah State on Feb. 1.
