CEDAR CITY, Utah– The Southern Utah women’s basketball team earned their second win of the season as they knocked off BYU 67-64 on Tuesday night in the America First Event Center.
“I’m super proud of the girls. I think they played really hard. To be down at halftime and come out in the second half the way they did was phenomenal,” head coach Tracy Sanders said. “We talked about defense and rebounding, things that are staples for us to win games, and they did a great job of executing to start the second half and get us back in the game.”
After trailing 35-24 at halftime, SUU rallied with a huge third quarter to take a 47-44 lead going into the final period.
Harley Hansen led the comeback with a team-high 18 points, including four three-pointers on eight attempts. Hansen also reeled in eight rebounds for SUU. Bre Reid and Rebecca Cardenas followed with 15 and 12 points respectively. Ashley Larsen rounded out the double-digit scorers with eleven points of her own.
Cardenas made a huge three pointer to put the T-Birds up one with 20 seconds to go. SUU forced a turnover and BYU picked up an unsportsmanlike foul that sent Cardenas to the line. Cardenas sunk the two free throws and sealed the game.
The Lady T-Birds improved to 2-3 overall with both wins coming against West Coast Conference opponents. Their next game will be Saturday, Dec. 1 at Oral Roberts University.
