Thunderbirds Rack Up All-Conference Honors At 2018 Outdoor Championships

CEDAR CITY, Utah — The Thunderbird men’s and women’s track and field teams picked up 14 All-Conference Honors last week at the 2018 Big Sky Outdoor Championships.

The Thunderbirds finished second on the men’s side and seventh on the women’s side.

This total of All-Conference honors matches the exact number the Thunderbirds earned at the 2018 Indoor Conference Championship.

One athlete who picked up two gold medals at the event was Tre James, who earned Most Valuable Athlete and Most Outstanding Performer following the conclusion of the meet.

“It speaks to his athletic ability, obviously, but people know him not only as a competitor but also a very nice guy,” SUU head coach Eric Houle said. “To have him in this program and to have him excelling in the program like he is are the things we all try to work towards.”

The women’s team also had a big year-to-year jump, after finishing 12th in 2017.

“I don’t get really discouraged when we fall out of the top five, because I know it’s just a matter of development and we’re going to be back there again,” Houle said. “But to see it actually happen is a relief.”

Next up for the Thunderbirds will be the NCAA Regional Championships in Sacramento, California where 11 T-Birds will compete for a spot at the NCAA National Championships.
