The 2017-18 Indoor Track & Field season will officially kick off for the Thunderbirds this week, as SUU will send athletes to compete at the BYU Indoor Invite in Provo.
The 2017 indoor season was a more than successful one for the Thunderbirds, on both the men’s and women’s sides.
A number of school records fell during the 2017 indoor campaign on the men’s side. Tre James (60-meter), Devon Montgomery (60-meter hurdles), George Espino (800-meter) and Jayson Kovar (Shot Put) all broke the school record in their individual event.
As a team, the grouping of Kasey Knevelbaard, Brandan Harley, Espino and Josh Collins broke the school record in the Distance Medley Relay with a time of 9:45.08.
The men’s squad ended up finishing second at the 2017 Big Sky Indoor Championships.
On the women’s side, a number of top marks in the school record book were set as well. Linnea Saltz broke the school record in the 600-meter with a time of 1:34.70.
SUU’s teams in the DMR (Josie Riggs, Laura Kehr, Saltz and Sharlie Dimick) and the 4×400 Relay (Mia Russell, Carly Dalton, Peyton Green and Saltz) also broke the school record in those events.
It won’t be a large group competing in Provo this weekend, but there will be some T-Birds to keep an eye on.
Erik Ostrom (Heptathlon) – In action on both Thursday and Friday, Ostrom will be competing in his first events as a Thunderbird as he takes on the indoor heptathlon. Ostrom is a freshman for SUU and a return missionary.
Celia Halpin (Triple Jump) – Entering her junior season, Halpin is third in the SUU women’s indoor record book with a triple jump of 35’ 7 ¼’’. She will compete on Friday.
Jentry Skidmore (Long Jump) – Skidmore will be competing in her first collegiate event as a true freshman. Skidmore came to Southern Utah from Syracuse High School.
