Drea Briggs, a junior transfer student studying construction technology, won the SUU Student Association (SUUSA) Shark Tank Competition on Nov. 14. SUUSA awarded $1000 to Briggs for her project to install four more water bottle filling stations across campus.
Similar to ABC’s “Shark Tank” television show, SUUSA’s event had a panel of judges to whom the candidates presented their ideas. Judges included representatives from different organizations on campus such as Evan Hernandez, representing the Center of Diversity and Inclusion; Keith Mason, the SUUSA veteran senator; Abbie Chapman, representing the Leavitt Center; Joshua Price, School of Business faculty; and Talora Jolley, representing the Student Programming Board.
Three finalists were chosen to present at the Shark Tank event held in the Living Room. McKenzie Maness and Christine Esplin suggested a reversed career fair where students showcase their skills to local employers. Christer Mercado proposed changing light bulbs around campus with bulbs which project light waves similar to the sun. Finally, Briggs requested adding four more water bottle filling stations in lacking buildings.
According to Briggs’ research, the installation of one refill station is approximately $500. With a total of $2000 for the project, Briggs is confident in its success. Locations for the refill stations are requested in the following buildings: The Sharwan Smith Student Center Rotunda, the Business building, the South Hall building and the Multipurpose Building.
Judges scores were compiled by a unanimous vote from the audience. Briggs has announced the winner and was funded $1000 for her project. She plans on combining this reward with a grant of $1000 awarded by Tiger Funk, Executive Director of Facilities Management.
