Northern Colorado Tops Southern Utah In Four Sets

With only two games left in the regular season, both teams gave it their all for a win tonight. After saving a set point, Southern Utah won a tight first set. However, the Bears then came charging back to win the match in four sets.

Both teams came out strong in the first set, and neither was able to gain a clear advantage. Macky Fifita led the way for the Thunderbirds recording yet another double-double. She delivered 17 kills and 14 digs.

Things came to a head in the set when the Bears had set point at 24-23. At which point, the Fifita came through with a kill to tie the score up.

Southern Utah won the first set 27-25.

Despite strong offensive performances from Janet Kalaniuvalu who hit 12 kills and MaCail Evans who had ten, Northern Colorado started to turn things around in the second set. The Thunderbirds were able to keep things close, but the Bears claimed the second set 25-23.

Led by 20 kills from Kortney Lockey and 15 from Alex Kloehn, Northern Colorado was able to gain the advantage in the third and fourth sets as well.

The Bears won the third set 25-21 and the fourth set 25-19.

Other big contributors on the day from Southern Utah are Anna Cox and Alexis Averett. Cox lad the team with five blocks, and Averett was on fire at the service line with three aces.

The Southern Utah volleyball team will conclude their season this Saturday on the road against Northern Arizona. Match play will begin at 1 p.m. MT.
