The Southern Utah Museum of Art hosted its monthly Sidekicks meeting on Tuesday, October 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. at SUMA. All materials were free and participants carved their own book stamps.
Armed with linoleum rubber blocks, trace paper and carving tools, students spent the evening carving intricate designs and meeting new people. Experience levels ranged from beginner to advanced, and employees were available to help students as needed. Free food and drinks were also provided.
“Sidekicks is our free membership program for SUU and Southwest Tech students,” Kaila Thompson, a student employee at SUMA, said. “It allows students to engage with SUMA’s art and figure out how to use SUMA as a resource.”
Once students sign up, they can earn points and win prizes. Points can be earned by visiting SUMA’s exhibits, inviting friends to join Sidekicks, reading staff-recommended books, volunteering and following SUMA on social media. These points can then be exchanged for prizes, including a SUMA pen, posters, bags, hats and stationery kits.
“I love Sidekicks because it gives opportunities for students to be creative,” said Lindy McLaws, a returning Sidekicks member. “Everyone is welcome, regardless of previous experience or chosen field of study.”
Each year, Sidekicks picks a theme to base their activities and prizes on. This year’s theme is “The Art of Books.” Each activity will revolve around literature, such as book binding and printmaking. Students are invited to read the chosen book for each month and then discuss it at meetings with fellow Sidekick members.
“I would definitely come again,” said Julia Carson, a new member to Sidekicks. “Everyone was so nice and it was a great way to meet new people.”
