Lindsay Aerts, the chief political correspondent for ABC4 News and host of “Inside Utah Politics,” covered an important political topic right on Southern Utah University’s campus at the Eccles A.P.E.X on Sept. 17.
In her speech, Aerts covered how local politics impact us more than who the president of the United States is. She reported that voting in the election closest to you and taking a stake in what is happening is the best way to get involved locally.
Aerts also covered how unique Utah is and shared some of its unique policies including its public lands, water issues, national parks, medical marijuana, citizen ballot initiatives, growth issues, gerrymandering and religious freedom among others.
Aerts put a special emphasis on asking questions in the “Utah Way,” which is to ask the question the audience is wondering in a cooperative, civil and consensual method of communication.
“The hardest part of political reporting sometimes is not the interview, it’s the voice in your own head before you ask the question,” said Aerts. “When you can learn to tame that voice and acknowledge that voice, you will do well in whatever you are trying to overcome.”
Aerts has had a very prolific career from working for 101.5, The Eagle, to becoming the host of the “Mom Show” for KSL Utah and now chief political correspondent and host of “Inside Utah Politics”. Aerts has been at ABC4 for two years and also covers the 4 p.m. news. Her story is an inspiration to many, inspiring others through her achievements and political speeches.
