Fourteen airports are now allowing approved visitors to go directly up to gates without a ticket instead of waiting behind TSA. The Salt Lake International Airport is part of the new program.
According to the TSA, guest side passes are available for non-travelers who have been approved by TSA PreCheck.
The free passes require an application one to three days before the visit, and you must use an active traveler number. The TSA PreCheck lanes will be open for people who are using the passes. Children can also qualify.
“As an exclusive benefit for our most trusted travelers, this new program makes it easier to return to the gate for welcomes and send-offs, meet friends during a layover, and enjoy dining and shopping along the way, bringing back the moments that once defined air travel,” the TSA website reads.
This new program will potentially allow missionary homecomings to be at gates. The Salt Lake airport is the only major airport in the state of Utah and has a large number of missionary homecomings for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The large-scale remodel of the airport is also set to include special rooms for large groups to gather just outside the security exit.
