Before taking a break between games for the rest of the month, the Southern Utah University women’s soccer team will head to Boise, Idaho, to take on Boise State University on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
The T-Birds just finished a wild homestand, starting with a 1-0 loss but turning around and recording an incredible 18-0 win, their largest in program history. They followed that up with a 2-2 draw this past week, posting their first tie of the season.
SUU will take on a strong contender in Boise State, who are currently on a four-game winning streak. This will be the Thunderbirds’ last game before conference play starts with a two-game homestand on Oct. 1.
Southern Utah
The Thunderbirds are 3-4-1 on the year and have already matched their win total from last season. A win against the Broncos would be a shot in the arm for an SUU team looking to establish itself in the school’s first year back in the Big Sky Conference.
Following the team’s 18-0 win versus Justice University, some standouts from that game continued their great play in the following game against California State University, Northridge. Sophia Memory and Gracen Blieschke recorded their third and fourth goals of the year respectively.
It’s difficult at this stage to fully trust SUU’s rate stats given their offensive onslaught against the Justice Lions. While they’ve technically averaged three goals per game this year, which is more than double their combined opponents, that number is closer to 0.85 when examining every game besides their 18-0 victory.
However, the team still has momentum like it hasn’t had in a while. They’re looking to post their first three-game non-losing streak since they recorded three ties in a row in 2023.
Boise State
The Broncos are a good team this year as they hold a 6-1-1 record. They’re currently on a four-game winning streak and haven’t allowed a goal since Aug. 30.
The team has been quite competent over the last few years, regularly winning double-digit games and recording more ties than losses. In fact, they didn’t lose a single game on the road last year, where they won the regular season title in the Mountain West before transferring to the Pac-12.
Boise State also has a streak of 11 straight home wins dating back to last season, the longest such streak in program history.
Boise State’s standout offensive performer so far this year has been midfielder Campbell Wilson. The freshman from Meridian, Idaho leads the team with six goals, five assists and 17 points, while also leading the team in shot accuracy.
The Broncos’ primary goalie, Ava de Leest, has been a strong presence in the net this year. She’s started every game, allowed just three goals in nearly 700 minutes on the pitch and has 27 saves under her belt.
SUU has faced Boise State nine times dating back to 2002, but has never emerged victorious. Their last game came in 2025, where the T-Birds tied the Broncos for the first and only time since 2005.
Where to watch?
