Politicians and supporters honor Charlie Kirk on the anniversary of his assassination

Sept. 10, 2026 marks the one year anniversary since Charlie Kirk, American political activist and entrepreneur, was shot at the Utah Valley University campus.

Kirk, the founder and spokesperson of political advocacy group Turning Point USA, was visiting the university on behalf of the organization when he was shot in the neck in front of around 3,000 attendees. Kirk was pronounced dead later that day at the Timpanogos Regional Hospital in Orem, Utah. The suspected shooter was 22-year-old Tyler Robinson from Washington, Utah.

Kirk’s controversial views and media influence made him a well-known name in American politics. Multiple politicians and other influential figures honored him today for the first anniversary of his death.

“Charlie Kirk believed disagreement was not something to fear,” said Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt on social media “It was something to embrace. He modeled it all over the country. America was built through debate, discussion and the free exchange of ideas. One year later, that message matters more than ever.”

The state of Utah has also responded in regards to the first year since Kirk’s death. Gov. Spencer Cox released an official statement declaring Sept. 10 as “Charlie Kirk Day” in the state.

“Today, we honor Charlie’s memory by choosing a politics worthy of our country,” Cox said. “One where we stand firmly for what we believe and reject violence.”

Today, Turning Point USA will return to UVU to host a memorial for Kirk. This event has caused controversy among the university’s students, with some planning to protest outside campus.

“We want to oppose bigotry, and we want to oppose right-wing ideology on campus,” said Collin Grannis, student and member of the UVU Democratic Society. “That’s our main push.”

Despite the backlash and scheduled protests, UVU and Turning Point still plan to hold the memorial today at 6:30 p.m. UVU has canceled all other on-campus classes and events for the evening.

One year later, Tyler Robinson is awaiting trial for the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Prosecutors have charged Robinson with aggravated murder, making him eligible for the death penalty.
