Family members of a young boy who was backed over and pinned underneath an SUV made the decision to take him off life support. The boy’s injuries were described as irrecoverable.
In the morning hours of Monday, March 23, 7-year-old Nathan Dees was on his way to school, riding his scooter, when an SUV backed up over him in the 1100 block of North Field Road. He was pinned underneath the vehicle until first responders on the scene were able to extract him. They performed CPR before he was transported to the hospital and airlifted to Primary Children’s Hospital in Salt Lake City.
Nathan’s family shared the news on Thursday, March 26, of that week, after he had been in the hospital for several days.
A statement released by the family says, “His brain injuries affect every part of his body—from cognition to basic reflexes, including his ability to see, hear, move, and eat,” said the family. “This is a reality no family should ever have to face, and we are devastated.”
The family shared that they want to allow Nathan to be a “hero” by donating his organs to help other children.
“We believe this is something he would have wanted—to bring light and hope to others even in this unimaginable moment. While this is a tragic ending to one story, we find some peace in knowing it can become a new beginning for many others through his gift,” the family said.
“In the end, Nathan is a superhero -our superhero- and his legacy of love and light will live on in the lives he helps save.”
