SUU Outdoors Education Series to teach fire making this Thursday

SUU Outdoors will be featuring Kyle Morgan as he teaches students primitive fire making techniques. The event will be held on March 26 in the SUU Outdoors Garage from 6 to 8 p.m.

The lesson will be taught by Morgan, a local fire making guru. He will teach attendees how to utilize friction to create a fire using materials that can be found in Southern Utah. Attendees will then have the opportunity to try these methods out for themselves. Free pizza will also be provided.

One of the primary methods taught at the event will be the bow drill. This method utilizes friction to generate heat, and is a common fire starting method. It involves using a bow to spin a wooden spindle on a plank of wood, with the resulting dust becoming hot enough to start a fire.

It can be especially useful to learn fire making techniques due to the abundance of outdoor activities around Cedar City. With hiking and camping being common activities in the spring and summer, being able to make fire is a good skill to have in case of an emergency on an excursion.
