Southern Utah University is hosting a kite-flying event to celebrate the Qingming festival. The event is Saturday, March 28, from 10 a.m. to noon, at Park Discovery.
Kites will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring their own. Participants will also learn about the significance of kite-flying during Qingming and spend time with friends in the warm spring weather.
Qingming is an annual Chinese festival that celebrates the coming of spring and honors ancestors. In English, Qingming is known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, when families visit and clean graves, make offerings of food and burn incense.
The actual Qingming Festival falls on April 4, 5 or 6 each year. This year it is on April 5.
Qingming is celebrated in mainland China and many other South Asian countries, including Taiwan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam.
The festival originated more than 2,500 years ago, but it wasn’t a public holiday in mainland China until 2008.
