Randolph’s record-breaking night lifts Flippin’ Birds above Washington

The Southern Utah University gymnastic team defeated the University of Washington on Friday, March 6, by a score of 196.900-195.550. 

It was an all-time night in the America First Event Center as Niya Randolph set a new program record of 9.975 on the floor event. Randolph also placed first on the uneven bars and beam, securing first place in the all-around with a final score of 39.575.

Southern Utah’s record rose to 7-9. They have one meet left before the conference tournament. 

Washington’s record now stands at 5-8.

Vault – 49.125

Randolph opened her all-around performance with a 9.900, winning first place and matching her career high. Kayla Pardue followed closely with a 9.875, securing second place. 

Vinciane Le Pen scored a 9.825, with Mackenzie Kelly posting a 9.775. Elliot Bringhurst and Sage Paladino both earned a 9.750. Senior Ellie Thompson’s exhibition earned her a 9.700 to commemorate senior night.

Bars – 48.950

Randolph performed another stunning routine on the bars, earning a season-high score and securing first place with a 9.925. Mia Hampton scored a 9.800, followed closely by Kendall McGuire with a 9.775. 

Alex Routsis scored a 9.700 and Ariel Collum notched a 9.650. Trista Goodman performed a senior night exhibition routine, scoring a 9.625 to round out the event. 

Beam – 49.300

The Birds swept the podium on the balance beam, with Hampton and Rylee Miller tying for first with 9.900 and Maria Ferguson placing third with a 9.875. 

Marisa de Groot had a 9.850, Randolph scored 9.775 and Emma Nipper posted a 9.625. Amelia Rieder performed an exhibition routine, scoring a strong 9.825.

Floor – 49.525

The Birds secured the entire podium on the floor exercise as well, topped by Randolph’s program-high score of 9.975. She was followed closely by Carilia Martinez with a new career-best 9.925. Berlin Hall took third place with a score of 9.900. 

To finish the meet, Miller earned a 9.875 while Hampton and Alyssa Fernandez both scored 9.850. The T-Birds scored a 49.525 on the floor exercise, the second-highest score in program history.

What’s next?

The Birds will continue their season against Boise State University on Friday, March 13. It’s their final meet before the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship. The meet will be at 7 p.m in Boise.
