On the brink of one of their most successful seasons ever, the Southern Utah University women’s basketball team will head to St. George, Utah, to take on rival Utah Tech University on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 2 p.m.
With a win, the team would achieve their second 20-win season since 2013-14 and their third such season in history. Their most recent campaign with this many wins was in 2022-23, when they made the NCAA Tournament.
This game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
Southern Utah
The T-Birds hold a 19-8 record and sit at 11-4 in the conference. They’re on a four-game winning streak and have won eight of their last nine.
After going a combined 17-43 over the last two seasons, this team has been one of the crowning achievements of SUU sports. They hold second place in the Western Athletic Conference, with just one more conference loss than California Baptist University. They are also tied with Abilene Christian University for the WAC’s best overall record.
The team has three more games before the WAC Tournament in Las Vegas. SUU is locked into a top-three seed and will automatically qualify for March Madness with a tournament victory.
SUU will be led over these last few games by a squad that’s been together through thick and thin this year. Among them is newly-crowned WAC Player of the Week Ava Uhrich, who won the honor for a conference-leading third time after averaging a double-double this past week.
Utah Tech
In stark contrast to their rivals, Utah Tech sits at the bottom of the WAC with an 8-17 record and 3-12 conference standing. They could potentially move up the rankings, but will most likely be the sixth or seventh seed in the conference.
Despite the rough record, the Trailblazers have won two games in a row. It was their second win streak of the year after their first two games, and snapped a nine-game losing stretch.
Before facing SUU, Utah Tech will take on conference No. 3 ACU, who are tied for the conference’s best overall record. This game will all but make or break their hopes of moving up in the standings.
The Trailblazers are led by Kaylee Borden and Brie Crittendon. The former leads the team in points, while ranking second in field goal percentage, assists and steals. The latter leads the team in rebounds, while ranking second in points.
