Southern Utah University will be hosting screenings of international films during the month of February. These screenings will be free to all and will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Sharwan Smith Theater, room 161D.
The festival, presented by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, will showcase films from around the globe, as well as short films produced by students in SUU programs.
The festival began on Monday, Feb. 9, with a screening of the German documentary “Reifenstahl .” The film details the life of controversial German director Leni Riefenstahl and her history making propaganda films for the Nazi party in the 1930s. The festival continued with a showing of French noir film “Le Samourai” on Tuesday, Feb. 10. The 60s-set gangster film has been cited as an influence on prolific filmmakers such as John Woo, Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino.
The next film to be screened at the festival is the 2007 documentary “Nanking.” The screening will occur on Thursday, Feb. 12. The following film will be shown on Tuesday, Feb. 17, with a showing of the Chilean documentary, “La memoria Infinita ” followed by a showing of the French animated film “Persepolis.”
On Monday, Feb. 23, SUU will be showcasing “Estoy Aqui,” a Spanish-language short film directed by SUU Filmmaking BFA student Paola Chavez. The film will touch on themes of family bonds in the face of ongoing trauma. The screening will then be followed up by the German film “Futur Drei” that same night.
The final two screenings of the festival will include Argentinian thriller “La larga noche de Francisco Santis” on Tuesday, Feb. 24, and the Chinese animated film “Ne Zha” on Thursday, Feb. 26.
