Gymnastics team returns home to face BYU

The Southern Utah University gymnastics team is returning home to Cedar City to face off against Brigham Young University on Friday, Feb. 6 at 6:30 p.m.

The meet will be streamed on Overnght.

Southern Utah

The Thunderbirds are currently sitting at a record of 2-5 after their tri-duel match on Feb. 1. While the team unfortunately lost their lead to San Jose State in the final rotation, they were able to come out on top of Texas Woman’s University and emerged with a respectable 195.525.

Despite the misstep, SUU swept all three weekly conference awards for the third time this season. Junior Niya Randolph earned Gymnast of the Week, while freshman Berlin Hall was named Freshman of the Week. The two have monopolized the awards this year. Alongside them, sophomore Mia Hampton scored her first award of the season, securing Specialist of the Week.

The Flippin’ Birds are currently ranked No. 26 nationally. They have proven to be adept and versatile in all four events, with all of their losses coming down to less than a one-point deficit. SUU has the potential to win against any school they’ve faced this season.

BYU

The Cougars are ranked No. 23 nationally and are coming off of a win against the University of Arizona, where they posted a strong 196.300.

BYU is currently ranked high on all four events. They are particularly dangerous on bars, ranking No. 16 nationally. They have also proven to be adept on floor and vault. Their relative weakness appears to be the beam, where they are ranked No. 27 nationally.

SUU has proven to be a well-rounded team, and if they come prepared with practice in all the events, particularly the bars, we could be looking at a competitive and triumphant win for the Flippin’ Birds.
