Looking to recover from some close losses, the Southern Utah University women’s gymnastics team will head to California on Sunday, Feb. 1, for the San José State Quad Meet at 3 p.m.
SUU will face San José State University and Texas Woman’s University. This meet will be streamed on the Spartans’ website at this link.
SUU
The Flippin’ Birds are currently sitting at a record of 1-4 after coming in last place at the best of Utah competition on Jan. 12, and barely losing to Utah State University the same week.
The team came up just short against the Aggies with a score of 195.700 to 195.550. Niya Randolph, Alex Routsis and Mia Hampton all placed in the top two of their respective events.
In this meet, the T-Birds are looking to surpass their season-high score of 195.675, which they’ve now scored twice. In losses, the Flippin’ Birds have averaged less than one point of deficit and have suffered from a few unfortunate falls. Their record isn’t as indicative of performance as most other schools.
San José State
The Spartans are sitting at a record of 3-1, also coming off of a loss to Utah State University on Jan. 17.
Their highest posted score of the season is 195.175 in their season opener against Arizona State University and the University of California, Davis.
The highest-scoring Spartans this season are Mikaela Pitts, who set a career high on vault this year with a 9.925, and their two all-round competitors, Sophie Patterson and Devyn Valuch.
Texas Woman’s
The Pioneers are a Division Two school coming to compete in this tri-meet, with a record of 2-4 overall.
They are coming off of a three-way loss at a quad-meet putting up a season low score of 193.300, ultimately taking last place to Temple University, The George Washington University and the University of Pennsylvania. TWU, also hoping to snap a losing skid, can become a .500 team with a victory in this meet.
In their last competition, TWU’s Sophia Isbell starred with a 9.825 on vault. That tied the junior’s career-high in the routine.
