House Bill 88, sponsored by Rep. Trevor Lee, would prevent immigrants from being able to access public health immunizations, homeless shelters and food banks. The bill comes in a series of potential laws that limit benefits for immigrants.
“Benefits and welfare should go to citizens only.” Lee said the bill is intended to prioritize taxpayer resources for citizens.
Some other bills that were introduced would prohibit immigrants from getting driving privilege cards, which currently allow some non-citizens to legally drive without acting as proof of legal status, and bar homeowners and landlords from renting or selling property to immigrants.
Additionally, Rep. Stephanie Gricius has introduced the idea of a 2% tax to international remittances, or money sent overseas. Gricius says that the tax will generate revenue for the state.
