Students painted masterpieces at STIL event

Southern Utah University students followed the instruction of an art education student in the Sharwan Smith Student Center Ballroom on Tuesday Jan. 20. They collectively painted a portrait of the Cater Carillion Bell Tower while enjoying a dessert and drink bar at the Student Involvement and Leadership’s event, titled “Mocktails and Masterpieces.”

The first 200 attendees were given free art equipment; brushes, an artist palette filled with acrylic paint and a blank canvas. Students filled up the seats within minutes of the event opening.

The mocktail bar was also a hit, with a line curving halfway around the ballroom.

SUU Student Gwen Jacobs saw the event advertised on the suustudentlife Instagram story, and decided to attend.

“I haven’t been paying too close (attention) to the instructions, but I’ve been enjoying painting,” she said.

Jacobs tries to attend STIL events whenever she can and says she always has a good time.

The art instruction went from 7:30 to 9 p.m., as the art education student showed students what paint colors to mix and what shapes to draw. The end results varied in accuracy, but all students were able to leave with their own masterpiece.

STIL hosts many casual events like these throughout the semester. To keep an eye out for the next activity, check out their Instagram and events page.

Additionally, SUU Student Association applications opened this week. Any student who wants to be involved in planning events like these, can apply with this form.
