Women’s basketball rolls past Nelson University in historic fashion

In their only matchup over the Thanksgiving break, the Southern Utah University women’s basketball team hosted Nelson University on Saturday, Nov. 29. SUU dominated the Warriors, a team in the National Christian College Athletic Association, 111-41.

The 70-point triumph was SUU’s largest margin of victory in team history. With the win, SUU improves to 6-1 on the season and 4-0 inside the America First Event Center. Nelson University falls to 1-8 on the year.

First quarter

The T-Birds jumped out to an early 8-0 lead thanks to Brooklyn Fely and Ava Uhrich. After a three from Nelson’s Sophia Morón, SUU went on a 13-2 run over a four-minute span to take a 21-5 lead.

Late in the quarter, SUU found some rhythm at the free-throw line, going 5/6 from the line and giving the Thunderbirds a 31-7 lead after one.

Second quarter

Nelson University’s Chloe Warren came out firing, giving the Warriors a quick six points in the first minute of play.

Over the next seven minutes though, it was all Southern Utah. The T-Birds went on a 20-1 run, shooting 8/16 from the field and 2/5 from three over that span. Both teams then traded three pointers late in the half as SUU went up 54-20.

Third quarter

Devyn Kiernan got things rolling for SUU with a three to start the second half. Kiernan was one of four T-Birds to score double-digit points.

Even though the teams traded baskets midway through the quarter, SUU continued to pull away. SUU finished the period on a 17-3 run, hitting four three-pointers in that span.

Fourth quarter

With Southern Utah up big, this gave head coach Tracy Mason the chance to give other players some playing time. Redshirt freshman Emily Scholtes scored five of her six points in the fourth.

Southern Utah hit four threes in the fourth quarter, setting a school record of 16 three-pointers in a game. SUU would go on to win 111-41 in dominating fashion.
