SUU Symphonic Band holds latest concert

The Southern Utah University Symphonic Band held their latest concert on Wednesday, Nov. 12 in the Student Center Ballroom.

The concert, entitled “Celebrations in Sound: Dances and Devotion,” allowed the band to showcase music that they have been working on during the past few weeks. The pieces showcased a variety of musical stylings, from downtempo Italian worship music to upbeat Cuban dance numbers.

The concert featured many soloists during the songs, all of which were performed by students in the band. The instruments of choice for these soloists included trumpet, flute and clarinet players, among others.

Featured flute soloist Anna Darter recently started playing in the Symphonic Band, but she has been playing the flute for eight years.

She further explained that playing a solo was definitely nerve-wracking, due to the fact that she was a freshman. She also expressed that while it was challenging, it was also very fun for her to play. She loved  the pieces that they got to perform, particularly “Danzon no. 2,” a piece meant to mimic the feel of a Cuban dance.

That piece seemed to be a favorite of the attendees. Zoe Tidwell, a freshman at SUU, also cited it as her favorite of the five pieces performed.

“It was just a lot of content and a lot of sounds you don’t usually hear,” Tidwell said.

She came to the concert to support her friend, and remarked at how much fun the concert was.

“I’m glad to have seen a band concert again,” she said. “It’s been a while.”

The Symphonic Band consists of musical artists that are students at SUU. The band includes numerous woodwind, brass and percussion players. Auditions to join the ensemble are open to all students, regardless of their field of study.
