Seven stars for Seven Brothers Burgers

Seven Brothers Burgers opened their newest location in Cedar City just a few weeks ago. The restaurant serves Hawaiian inspired smash burgers, banana bread, salads and shakes. By the end of my meal, my friends and I ended up planning and booking a trip to Hawaii.

“We come from a small town village-like community in Hawaii, and we always felt like Cedar City had a small town village vibe,” said Seth Hannemann, one of the seven brothers who own and run the restaurant chain. “We came to Cedar City because the people here are absolutely amazing. Cedar’s been on our map and vision board for many, many years.”

I tried Seek’s Deep Blue burger which comes with bacon, Swiss cheese, ranch, barbeque sauce, “house sauce” and, of course, blue cheese. In my experience, the bun is usually the worst part of the burger because it’s dry or flavorless. But the brioche buns, which Hannemann said are specially made for them, were chewy with a slight hint of sweetness that added a depth of flavor to the burger.

The burger was smothered in sauce, which is exactly what I wanted, and layered with salty bacon. The patty was crispy and well seasoned without being dry or too thin to taste. I definitely had ranch and barbeque sauce all over my face while I ate, but the mess was worth it.

The banana bread, sweetly named ‘Mom’s Banana Bread,’ was priced at an expensive $10 for a mini loaf, and had an earthy flavor with sweet, melted chocolate chips. The coconut on top added a nice texture to counterbalance the soft bread. There was almost a delay in flavor when I took a bite; Although I really enjoyed the bread, it’s hardly justifiable to spend $10 on a mere four or five small slices when the cost of a single banana is 20 cents.

The crazy fries, which are greatly reminiscent of In-N-Out’s animal style fries, were a crowd favorite. The seasoned potato slices were topped with caramelized onions, American cheese, house sauce, which is a fry sauce of ketchup and mayo, grilled pineapple and bacon. I truly didn’t know there was pineapple or bacon on the fries, but the creamy melted cheese with the crispy fries and sweet onion slices was incredible. The large fry, priced at $6, was enough for four people to share with their burgers. I could see myself just getting a small crazy fry for lunch sometime. Definitely worth a try.

Hannemann said if you could only try one menu item, you should try the Paniolo burger.

“My dad said that the Paniolo burger was made by God, inspired by God the almighty. (It’s) quite the claim.” The burger is stacked with onion rings to resemble a volcano.

Overall, the food and ingredients were high quality. In an era with shrinkflation, Seven Brothers delivered big portions for a relatively competitive price. Everything, from the fries to the burger, had a hint of sweetness, like a pineapple had been transported next to the ingredients, which was unique. I wasn’t fully convinced I loved the sweetness but when I’m in the mood for Seven Brothers, which seems to be all the time now, I expect and crave it.

I don’t know the last time I craved a burger at 8 a.m. when I was writing a review the next day. I think Cedar City finally has a burger place worth mentioning.
