SUU Community Garden thrives at annual Harvest Festival despite recent flooding

Coming back for the 5th time, Southern Utah University’s College of Natural Sciences hosted its annual Harvest Festival on Friday, Sept.19, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the SUU Community Garden.

Located next to the Eccles dorm building, the community garden encountered some flooding earlier this year due to Cedar City heavy rain. Still, thanks to a new form of planting beds, the organization bounced back and harvested plenty of fresh produce for students.

“We’ve had a really good growth. I would say we’re on track with how we did last year, which is actually kind of amazing since this is a new form of growing for us,” said Aubrey Hall, president of the garden. “We went from having all above-ground beds to in-ground beds, so we’ve done a lot of experimenting, but I feel like the club is going strong as well as the garden.”

The garden encouraged students to help themselves to the homegrown tomatoes, pumpkins, cucumbers and more. On top of the fresh goods, the table was full with a variety of dishes, including sweet potato naan bread, apple pie, tomato soup and spinach curry.

“I think my favorite thing about (the garden) is the people and getting to feel social and a part of a type of community,” said Mya Taylor, a second-year member. “I love being somewhere where I can work with my hands and being outside, getting the fresh air.”

Along with the food, students enjoyed some live music with violin and guitar performances while painting rocks that will later be displayed in the garden grounds. The area features picnic tables, hammocks, swings and benches inviting everyone to join.

“I was really nervous to come for the first time because social events are not really my thing, but to anybody who feels like that, just be brave. I promise it’s not as scary as you think,” added Taylor.

The Community Garden meets on Thursdays at 7 p.m. More information about upcoming events, as well as their goals and initiatives, can be found on their Instagram.
