Struggling T-Birds aim for win against Rebels

Winless through the first five games of the season, the Southern Utah University women’s soccer team aims for win number one as they host the University of Nevada, Las Vegas on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 1 p.m.

This match will be played on the Thunderbird Soccer Field and can also be streamed on ESPN+.

Southern Utah
SUU enters the week 0-3-2 on the year and is coming off a two-game road trip in which they went 0-1-1. One of the main reasons for the struggles is the offensive productions. SUU is averaging less than one goal a game and has yet to score more than one goal in a single match.

Offensively, redshirt senior Avery Kyle leads the T-Birds with three points, followed by Whitney Gardner, Aubrie Labno, and Carly Radke with two points. Gardner and Labno lead the team with five shots on goal each.

As for the defense, redshirt senior Jazmyn Brass has been the only goalkeeper for SUU, allowing 2.2 goals a game with 29 saves. If SUU is to snag their first win of the year, they need Brass to step up big.

UNLV
The Rebels head into Cedar City with a 1-4-1 record and are 0-1-0 on the road this year. After a slow start to the season, UNLV picked up their first win of the season with a 3-0 shutout against the University of California, Riverside on Sept. 4.

On offense, UNLV is led by a pair of seniors. Midfielder Michelle Madrid and defender Torie Reardon lead the Rebels with four points each. Madrid leads the team with two goals while Reardon is the leader in assists with two.

Unlike SUU, the Rebels have thrown out three different goalies to start the year. Sophomore goalkeeper Elesha Magley leads the team with appearances in three games and holds the sole win for UNLV.

Southern Utah is 1-10 all-time against UNLV, with their last win coming on Aug. 8, 2018.
