Fresh off their first win of the season the Southern Utah University football team will be looking to keep their streak alive as they travel to the University of San Diego to play the Toreros. The game will take place on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. at Torero Stadium. The game can also be streamed on ESPN+.
After the defense stole the show last week, allowing only 23 yards on the ground, SUU was ranked the No. 24 team in the Football Championship Subdivision. If they can continue to put pressure on San Diego as they did with Idaho State, it should be a great matchup.
Linebacker Mason Stromstad produced a team-high six tackles last week, while Josh Dunn and Jakobi Spence both added five tackles of their own.
The Thunderbird offense was also on fire last week, scoring 46 points, the most points scored by a T-Bird offense since 2023. Quarterback Bronson Barron had an incredible game, completing 19 out of 25 passes resulting in 240 yards and three touchdowns. In addition, for the first time since 2023, Southern Utah had two players with over 100 rushing yards, Joshua Dye with 180 yards and Will Burns with 107.
Dye was also named United Athletic Conference’s Offensive Player of the Week. He scored two touchdowns for the SUU offense, and will be a key player in this San Diego matchup.
Last week, the Toreros played in their season opening match against California Polytechnic State University and weren’t able to produce a win, as they fell 17-41. Their offense pushed as they were trailing by only 10 points in the fourth quarter, but weren’t able to defeat Cal Poly.
Southern Utah is 2-0 all-time against San Diego with their last matchup coming in 2010. SUU won that game 32-3.
