Multiple visas revoked for international college students in Utah

International students studying at Utah colleges have had their visas revoked due to new federal immigration actions. These students have also had their records expunged with the Student and Exchange Visitor Program, which is where their immigration status is tracked and monitored.

As of now, over two dozen international students in Utah have had their visas revoked, and are now being instructed to vacate the country. A majority of these students were attendees or graduates at the University of Utah.

It was stated that these students’ visa revocation was due to “failure to maintain nonimmigrant status” or because of a recent criminal record check.

“Over the course of any school year, international students may have their visas revoked or SEVIS records terminated as the result of an arrest or being charged with criminal activity,” shared a University of Utah spokesperson. “These activities can include domestic violence allegations or driving under the influence.”

Despite the majority of students being associated with the University of Utah, Weber State, Snow College and other Utah schools have reported small numbers of their international students with their visas revoked.

Southern Utah University has not reported any revocations as of now, but faculty and staff want students to be informed and aware of the current situation.

The SUU International Affairs Office will continue to provide guidance and support for these students. They recently shared this through an Instagram post:

“Dear International Community. We’re here for you. Recent national changes have affected SEVIS statuses — and we want to make sure you’re informed and supported.”
