“The Premiere” dance performance to fill SUU Auditorium this weekend

From April 4 to 5, a dance performance choreographed by Abigail Fausett as part of the Dance Black Box Grant program will fill the walls of Southern Utah University’s Auditorium. Titled “The Premiere,” the production will begin at 7:30 p.m. and offer audiences a reflective experience on human desire.

“The Premiere” explores humans’ tendency to constantly desire more, even when unnecessary. With vast movements, the performance journeys through this idea and explores the realization one has that they are exactly where they need to be.

“The theme I focused on is what it means to be human. It starts out quite serious, but as it goes on begins to feel like a breath,” said Fausett. “I wanted the audience to feel as though they are experiencing everything along with the dancers. I made sure to include moments of human to better connect the audience to the work.”

Beginning early in the spring semester, the process of creating the show involved a significant collaboration. Inspired by their dancers, Faussett used choreographic exercises and partner work to generate movement sequences. In this way, it illustrates an additional theme to the choreography: connection and lack thereof.

“My favorite thing about this whole process has definitely been being in the studio with my dancers,” said Faussett. “They inspire me every rehearsal and none of this would have been possible without them.”

Alongside the choreography, the production required extensive planning, including costumes, sound design, lighting, publicity and numerous rehearsals, to deliver the vision to its utmost.

“It is so exciting to have an idea like this and have the opportunity to bring it to life,” added Faussett. “We have had enough time to prepare and I feel ready to share this work with others.”

“The Premiere” tickets are $5 at the door and are available 30 minutes before the show begins.
