Who are Philip Broome and Preston Cox?

Philip Broome is running for Southern Utah University’s student body president alongside his trusty roommate, Preston Cox.

Fate brought the two together when they were assigned to be roommates in on-campus housing. Unexpectedly, Broome approached Cox and mentioned the idea of running for president to which Cox replied, “And this involves me how?”

It didn’t take much convincing to persuade Cox that he was ready for the role of vice president. Both are determined to bring changes to the ways students interact with each other and with leadership on campus through their presidency.

The three main initiatives of Broome and Cox’s campaign are to empower students’ voices and identities, expand networking opportunities and bring Greek life back to campus.

The pair have worked extensively with the mySUU voice form, the STIL center and want to bring about a social media page dedicated to transparent communication between the student body president and the students of the university.

Having been involved with over 80 clubs and organizations together, campus life has had a great impact on the candidates’ college experiences. From playing in the marching band to being vice president of finance for the economics department to playing lacrosse, they’ve participated in just about everything SUU has offered.

“We want students to know that our platform is more than just a promise, it’s (the) idea that your success is our success,” said Broome. “We’re a team, and we can’t represent you if we don’t know what’s going on in our community.”

Since beginning their candidacy, the pair have attended a minimum of four clubs and organizations each day to understand the needs of the students around them.

They’re also passionate about bringing improvements to the career and internship fairs SUU puts on. They are working towards having major-specific job fairs so students can find out how to get involved in their respective fields and be introduced to the right people.

Additionally, they believe that Greek life greatly enhances students’ experiences through more opportunities for financial aid, cultivating connections and promoting diversity and individuality.

“I want to make sure that students are seen first, that you know that while you’re here, you’re a priority. You were valued, you were seen, you were heard,” said Broome. “No matter what legislation says, no matter what anybody else says you are a student first. If I’m going to run as your student body president, you’re my student, I’m your president and we’re going to work together to make sure that I can help you in every way possible.”

Voting is now open and closes Thursday, March 6 at 5 p.m. Be sure to get informed, read the candidates’ platforms and vote for the leaders who represent your needs.
